My truck has no drive power

I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota 4x4 3.9 v6. 104k Miles. I was cruising at about 60 mph when it lost all power. The truck idels ok, a little rough. When the truck is in neutral it will rev when I accellerate, but when it is in gear there is very little power, it will only go about 10 - 15 mph. I've been told that this could be a timing belt or timing chain problem. Is this accurate? Could it be a transmission problem? Suggestions?

Yes, it could be a transmission, but a clogged catalytic converter can also cause a loss of power.

Reply to Bryan's Post: What about a timing problem? Could that also be the case? Do you think that a clogged catalytic converter could cause that much problem all of a sudden or would have it progressed over the last several months? What should I check first?

Timing could cause such a problem. Now, depending on the type of failure of the catalytic converter, would determine whether it comes on suddenly or not. If I remember correctly, this was a problem occurring when the engine was at operating temperatures. Timing would not normally affect power according to temp.
