1989 Toyota truck 5 spd speedometer

Speedometer in 1989 Toyota pickup with 5 spd trans makes noise and the needle jumps. It may work ok when it is hot out but is very bad in cold weather. I replace the cable and it did not help. Local shop tells me that the unit is made to be replaced and not repaired. If it can not be repaired do you know of an after market source that sells a unit that will fit?

Response to MercyAutoClinic's Post: The problem is in the speedometer not the transmission. A local shop that repairs speedometers says that parts are not available because Toyota made the unit as a replace only. The housing is sealed plastic. Yes I know I can buy a 15 year old unit at a junk yard that probably has twice the millage as mine. After the pain of removing the broken one and installing the used one what chance do I have of it working for 6 months? Again do you know of any one that has figured out a way of repairing them or of an after market unit that will fit?
